Reading the rupee and reserves
- PKR per US dollar
- What one US dollar costs in rupees. When the number rises, the rupee has weakened: imports cost more and dollar earnings are worth more.
- SBP reserves
- The liquid foreign currency the State Bank of Pakistan holds, used to pay for imports and to repay foreign debt.
- Bank reserves
- Foreign currency held by commercial banks, mostly their customers’ dollar deposits. Total liquid reserves are the two together.
Questions about the rupee and reserves
Why do reserves matter for the stock market?
Reserves show how comfortably Pakistan can pay its import bill and debts. Falling reserves have usually come with a weaker rupee and higher rates, rising reserves with the opposite.
Which companies gain from a weaker rupee?
Exporters and companies that earn in dollars, such as textile exporters, IT companies and oil and gas producers whose prices are set in dollars. Importers and companies with dollar debt lose.
How often are reserves published?
Every week, as at the end of the week. The exchange rate is published every business day.
